Cooling and refrigeration


Hot air can also be used to generate cooling, i.e. for absorption chillers. Absorption chillers are thermal driven refrigerators where the cold is generated by a thermal compressor. The waste heat can thus be used not only for heating applications, but also for cooling. This pays of, especially in the summertime.

Thanks to combined heat, power and cooling, the annual energy consumption decreases significantly. Combined with government incentives, very short payback periods are possible.

Example: Operation of an absorption chiller by waste heat from an exhaust air purification plant

  • Clean air: 180 °C
  • Warm water: 90 °C
  • Refrigerating capacity: 360 kW (maximum at full load)
  • EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio): 2,2
  • Government incentives (Germany, 460 t CO2 savings): 128,000- €
  • Payback period: 2.5 years
